The author of this book is Robert Hitt Neill (1942-2024). He grew up on a farm in a small Mississippi Delta hamlet called Brownspur, just outside Leland on the famous "Blues Highway", U.S. Hwy 61. Growing up, there existed a real amateur baseball team named The Barefoot Dodgers. It was primarily made up of local black young men whom the local white young men all knew and actually played baseball together. That, itself, was something that today one wonders how they got away with it considering the racial customs of that time. Many years passed. Neill and his friends remembered and talked about those good times playing baseball, and Neill decide to write this book.  He had difficulty recalling some of the names and details of those days, so he contacted all his old friends and, ultimately, was able to construct this story which he wrote as historic fiction, but based it on several years of actual recalled and recorded history.
