Vintage Fenton Fairy Lamp:
"Holly Berries"
Yellow Uranium Custard Glass
S Mullins
This listing is for one (1) vintage Fairy Lamp made by the Fenton Glass Company of West Virginia, USA. It consists of two pieces: a domed top and footed bottom. It is made of uranium glass which glows a neon green under black UV light. The hand painted pattern is "HollyBerries" on custard aka Holly Berry aka Holly. This pattern was also painted on milkglass and clear glass.
This piece was made in the 1970s using the same technique that Fenton used since it opened its doors in 1905: Hot glass is poured into a mould and pressed by hand. After the glass is cooled, it is dipped in a chemical solution which creates the satin finish. The satin finish creates a porous surface which is ideal for paint to adhere to. After each piece is hand painted, frit (crushed glass) is added to create a 3-D appearance. The, it is baked in the kiln at a low temperature to bake the color and frit into the glass.
Each piece is signed by the artist who painted it. This specific piece was hand painted by Sharon Mullins.
Fairy Lamps date back to the Victorian era before electricity was widely available. During this time, they helped prevent house fires by safely containing the flames of a candle. They were popular again in the 1970s when this particular Fairy Lamp was manufactured. Nowadays, they make perfect night lights for a nursery or any room in your home. I highly recommend using flameless votive lights to avoid any damage to glass and the danger of an open flame. It is in excellent condition without any chips or cracks. All my UV light pictures are taken under 395nm UV light; normal light pictures are taken under direct sunlight. Enjoy the pictures and thank you for your consideration!
