This exceptional circa 1987 Adolfo at Saks Fifth Avenue two-piece silk dress juxtaposes an exuberant, multicolor abstract print with romantic black floral lace. Designed by Cuban-born American couturier Adolfo Sardiña, the matching blouse and skirt were retailed through Adolfo’s prestigious boutique at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. The ivory silk is covered with a whimsical abstract scribble print in cobalt blue, bright green, red, yellow and black. The effect is a particularly appealing example of the colorful graphic prints of the 1980s. The blouse has two parts: a strapless top in the printed silk fabric that is loosely attached to a black lace yoke that covers the shoulders and upper arms. The lace has a beautifully scalloped lower edge that covers the top of the bodice, creating the appearance of a delicate lace capelet over a strapless dress. This pairing closes with a zipper and self-covered buttons in back. The dirndl style skirt is lined with stiff interfacing that gives it a lot of body. It has a side zipper, hidden on seam pockets, and a sash attached to the waistband in back. A broad band of the same scalloped black lace trims the hem, visually echoing the lace at the top. Although constructed as separate pieces, the blouse and skirt combine to read as a single dress. Both pieces retain their original “Adolfo at Saks Fifth Avenue” designer labels, and an additional label identifies the fabric as “All Silk.” The skirt also retains its ILGWU union label and is marked Made in U.S.A.
