1864 Great Britain Queen Victoria National Art Competition by A.Vechte 145mm
Recipient Details :
Recipient: Agnes D. Fletcher
Year Awarded: 1864
Award Level: Stage IIIb
By Antoine Vechte
The "Stage IIIb" Classification: In the Victorian Department of Science and Art curriculum, the "National Art Competition" sorted entries into rigorous academic "Stages". Stage III strictly covered "Drawing from Models" or architectural/ornamental outline practice. The sub-category "b" specifically designated success in shading from geometric models or ornament casts, rather than a simple line drawing.
Design & Artistry: The piece was beautifully designed by the famed French sculptor and goldsmith Antoine Vechte (1799–1868).Allegorical Details: The central portrait of the Queen is encircled by a highly detailed, Mannerist-style frieze depicting allegorical figures representing Genius, Justice, Truth, Science, Fame, and Time.Inscriptions: The central text reads "VICTORIA QUEEN BY THE GRACE OF GOD 1857". The lower rim is inscribed with "FOR SUCCESS IN THE NATIONAL ART COMPETITION"
Medallion is considered scarce and historically unique. While the overall National Art Competition design by Antoine Vechte was produced iteratively for decades, each individual piece functions as a one-of-a-kind archival document due to its specific hand-engraved recipient data.Rarity & Value FactorsUnique Personal History: Because it explicitly names Agnes D. Fletcher in 1864, this medal is a unique historical artifact. These medals were only awarded to a select few students across the entire United Kingdom who achieved national success in the South Kensington system.
