Vintage Tonala Pottery Owl Hand Painted Mexican Folk Art Ken Edward’s Studio

In excellent vintage condition, just light surface wear commensurate with age and minor irregularities given the nature of the material and handmade process.

Tonala pottery featuring a snail hallmark is associated with the studio of Ken Edwards and his artisan painters like Francisco Martinez, where individual apprentices painted pieces and signed them with a studio "KE" mark alongside an animal signature or small painted icon like a snail. 

About the Snail Signature

• Ken Edwards Studio: Master potter Ken Edwards established workshops in Tonalá, Mexico (including association with El Palomar)

• The Painter's Mark: While pieces bear the "KE" studio stamp, individual artists added a small secondary hand-painted animal or insect icon-such as a snail, scorpion, bird, or mouse to identify who painted the piece.

• Other Artisans: Painters like Francisco Martinez (who used "FM") often combined their initials with the studio's iconic small snail or creature graphics.

Today, the artisans of the Valley of Tonalá still use the burnishing techniques of their pre-Hispanic ancestors, fused with colonial styles that resulted in sophisticated ceramics that became an important part of Mexico's artistic traditions.
