Hobo Nickel by Elmer Villarin Family Of Owls Signed EV-2012 On Edge. During our recent vacation we met with Wayne Stafford, a long-time customer now retired and living full time in the Philippines. Collectors of Civil War tokens may recognize the name as the foremost collector of Indiana Primitives, a collection he sold through our catalog and eBay sales.  What you may not know is his wife Nenet is a Filipino whose cousin, Elmer Villarin, was a skilled jeweler and engraver turned Hobo Nickel artist.  Wayne started the ball rolling in 2000 by commissioning Elmer to create a number of Hobo Nickels each year.  Around 2001, he began signing his pieces and in 2002 also dating and numbering his creations.  His skill improved rapidly and he was even featured in the Fall 2010 issue of BoTales.  One of Elmer's favorite subjects were American Indians, partly because many Filipinos, himself included, look like Native Americans. We sold a few of these on eBay in 2017-2019.  Wayne also has sold a number over the years including on eBay as well.  Wayne saved some of his favorites and has given us 40 or so to sell on his behalf.  Nearly all are dated 2002 through 2012 when an injury forced Elmer into retirement as an engraver.
