- Everyone puts these as "salesman samples", when they are, in fact, unused gift certificates. If you wanted to buy Daddy a hat, you paid for it and got this. It represented the style of hat you got as a gift. Then Daddy went back and got a hat that fit. There were no returns, so no taking one home and returning. And it makes no sense for salesmen - "I couldn't carry an actual hat around, far too heavy. But would you like to look at a mini one made of different materials that is nothing like the real thing?" Salesman samples were for heavy things like farm equipment or furniture. This is also why they are rare -- most people redeemed them. Antiques and collectibles rant over.
