This Silver 8 Reales is a tangible survivor of the moment when the last major Spanish possession in the East Pacific adapted its currency policy to a new child queen while the Spanish Empire’s American holdings had already been lost. The host’s Republican Liberty design and the Spanish colonial crowned cipher of Isabella II sit together on the same silver coin —an eloquent numismatic contradiction of the era.
This is a Spanish Philippines Type VI (T6) countermarked 8 Reales of the Isabella II period (applied 1834–1837), struck on a host 1833 Lima, Peru Republic Silver 8 Reales (assayers MM). The countermark is a hand-held punch applied (usually by hammer) in Manila. It consists of a crowned royal cipher “Y.II.” (for Ysabel/Isabel II) set within an incuse circular indent or depression. The crown and lettering show fine details, including sequences of pearls or beads whose arrangement. This Interesting Specimen documents the practical and ideological response of a remaining Spanish colony to the independence of the American mainland. The countermark simultaneously validated the silver for local use and rejected the republican messaging of the host. It also illustrates the continuing importance of Spanish-American silver in the Asian trade circuits centered on Manila.
Historical Context of the Philippines Countermarks:
By the late 1820s the former Spanish colonies in mainland America had achieved independence and were striking their own silver coins bearing republican legends and symbols (“REPUBLICA,” “INDEPENDENCIA,” “LIBRE,” standing Liberty figures, etc.). Spain did not recognize these governments and viewed the legends as subversive. Large quantities of this silver nevertheless reached the Philippines through trade. Manila lacked a significant local silver mint at the time and depended on imported pesos for commerce (especially the China trade).
To control the circulating medium, revalidate the silver content, and neutralize the political message of the republican designs, the colonial authorities ordered official counter-marking. After Ferdinand VII’s death (29 September 1833), a new decree of 20 December 1834 authorized the crowned “Y.II.” punch for the infant queen. Application continued until suppressed on 31 March 1837 (by a decree of 1 February 1836). The short window of use makes genuine Y.II. pieces scarcer than the earlier F.7.o issues in some host combinations. The punches were prepared locally (Diego de los Reyes is associated with the hand-held series). Coins were often submitted in batches; worn, holed, or already-chopmarked pieces were frequently revalidated this way. The policy applied primarily to 8 Reales (and occasionally gold or minor silver), though minor denominations with these countermarks are rare.
During the exact years of the Y.II. countermarking (1834–1837),Queen Isabella II of Spain was a small child; real power rested with the regency and successive governments in Madrid while the Carlist War raged on the peninsula. In distant Manila the colonial bureaucracy simply updated the sovereign’s cipher on the punches. Isabella’s long and turbulent personal reign later (she was declared of age in 1843) was marked by political instability, military pronunciamientos, and scandals, ending with her deposition in the Glorious Revolution of 1868. She spent the rest of her life in exile in France.
