​Historical Note & Context

​This rare original photo captures the famous deep-water lay-up anchorage at King Harry Reach / Carrick Roads on the River Fal in Cornwall, England. During international shipping slumps in the post-WWII era, shipping companies used the sheltered Cornish river valleys to tie up idle cargo vessels fore-and-aft.

• ​SS AZUERO (Foreground): Prominently featured in the foreground is the AZUERO. Built in 1944 in Panama City, Florida, as the World War II EC2-S-C1 Liberty ship SS James H. Kimball. She was purchased in 1947 by S.G. Embiricos and operated under the Panamanian flag.

• ​SS MARILENA: Tied alongside her is the cargo freighter MARILENA (or MARILENA P).

• ​The Background: Additional Liberty-type freighters and steamships are anchored in pairs along the wooded bends of the river.

​The photograph was taken from the deck of a passing excursion boat or the historic King Harry Ferry, making for a fascinating snapshot of 20th-century British maritime history.
