This item is a vintage Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O RY) metal oil or water can. 

The stamped lettering visible across the center of the can body explicitly spells out C & O RY, confirming its original use as property of the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.

These heavy galvanized utility canisters were standard equipment for steam-era train maintenance and track crews.
