A SCARCE DIE II SMALL-MULTIPLE WATERMARK 2/- MAROON KANGAROO VARIETY: “BREAKS WEST OF TASMANIA ABOVE ‘LI' OF SHILLINGS” - UNLOCATED PLATE POSITION (RECURRING) - 2025 CV APPROX $125 - $200 (RECURS IN BROWN & MAROON SCARCE & UNDOCUMENTED)
The Small-Multiple Watermark 2/- Maroon Kangaroo was printed by JOHN ASH in January 1929 and issued in March of that year. They were printed from two Plates (Plate 1 - UPPER and Plate 2 - LOWER) each with 120 stamps-on in two Panes of 60 each in 10 Rows of 6 stamps. These marsupials were used to 'make-up' the higher telegram, parcel and airmail charges of the day as well as bulk postage charges and were replaced by the CofA Watermark Kangaroo in August 1935... There were two printings in January 1929 and March 1930 totalling 9,600,000 stamps. THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) does not list this particular variety, however as you can see, there is a very clear and distinct series of FOUR BREAKS ABOVE ‘LI’ OF SHILLINGS TO THE WEST OF TASMANIA in this lovely variety marsupial. The ACSC lists the recurring varieties for the Small Multiple Watermark at an average CV of $125 to $200. Please note the last two scans which show a previously listed 2/- BROWN and MAROON example in the 3rd & Small Multi Watermarks. I have listed before I x Small Multi and 2x BROWN (last 5 scans below) so I believe SCARCE as I have only ever seen these examples in thousands of Kangaroo listings...
