A VERY NICE 5/- GREY&PALEYELLOW 3rd WATERMARK KANGAROO VARIETY: "BROKEN TAIL ON KANGAROO" - ACSC 44(V)e - PLATE POSITIONS: L4, L9, L12 and R27 - 2025 CV$325
The 3rd Watermark printing of the 5/- Kangaroo was made in December 1917. The stamps were placed on sale in April 1918. These marsupials were printed by J.B. COOKE to May 1918 then by T.S. HARRISON to February 1926, followed by A.J. MULLETT to June 1927 and lastly by J. ASH to late 1929. They were printed from a Frame Plate with 120 stamps-on in two panes (Right and Left) of 60 each in 10 horizontal rows of 6 stamps. They were used for the higher Telegram and Parcel and Bulk postal charges of the day. In all, there were 13 printings resulting in 2,672,640 stamps. This stunning vignette variety is listed in the AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) as:

This vignette variety recurs at positions L4, L9, L12 & R27 ... that is … at three stamp locations on the Left Pane and one on the Right Pane of the single '120-on' Plate used for printing the 3rd Watermark 5/- from 1917). This one is centered to the right (as many "OS" stamps were) and there are a few 'nibbled' perforations at the top left. After saying that, the colour here, and the speckled nature of the YELLOW ink is very interesting.
