A LOVELY CofA WATERMARK 9d VIOLET KANGAROO PAIR: 3R41: "COLOUR SPOT JOINING TWO LINES NW CAPE LEVEQUE" + 3R47: "SMALL BREAK ABOVE LEFT SIDE OF 'U' OF AUSTRALIA IN UPPER INNER FRAME" (BANWELL & PARSONS LISTED VARIETIES - CV APPROX $200+ - LOVELY PAIR (3R41 FIRST TIME LISTED)
The CofA Watermark 9d Violet Kangaroo was printed by J. ASH in February 1932 and issued on 20 April 1932. The stamps were issued to Post Offices in sheets of 120 off Plates 3 and 4. These marsupials were replaced by the 9d Platypus definitive on 1 September 1938, but before that, there were some 24,720,000 CofA Violets printed. These varieties are listed in the very comprehensive study of the Australian 9d Violet Kangaroo by A.D. Banwell & R.F. Parsons entitled: THE 9d KANGAROO STAMPS (2005) as:
3R41: SHADING NORTH WEST OF CAPE LEVEQUE: COLOUR SPOT JOINING TWO LINES, 2.5mm FROM LEFT FRAME, 8.25mm FROM UPPER FRAME.
3R47: UPPER INNER FRAME: SMALL BREAK ABOVE LEFT SIDE OF U; MAY BE ALMOST CLOSED.
These varieties recur at 3R41 and 3R47 … that is … they are the 41st and 47th STAMPS on the RIGHT PANE of PLATE 3 (the Upper Plate used to print the Die IIb CofA 9d Violet Kangaroos). The varieties are found in the 3rd Watermark, Small Multiple Watermark & the CofA Watermark and these are found in a lovely VERTICAL PAIR. They are in Very Fine condition with very nice CDS. The reference scans are from Banwell & Parsons (which is also now available from danmagpie). This is the first time I have ever listed 3R41 in ANY watermark (in thousands of Kangaroo variety listings).
