The Cole family represents one of the oldest and most legendary pottery lineages in America, producing traditional stoneware in North Carolina since the 1700s. Sandy and her husband Kevin opened North Cole Pottery in 1989, specializing in wheel-thrown folk art. Sandy Cole’s work beautifully showcases the Central Piedmont tradition. This piece is a fantastic example of a whimsical face butter dish or cheese dome, utilizing unglazed white kaolin clay for the sculpted teeth, horns, or facial contours. The Glaze: The glossy, golden-tan, and honey-brown hues seen on the dome lid are iconic results of their wood-fired kiln, which melts the glaze components down into a smooth, glassy, and visually rich surface finish.
