The dark grey appearance of this filter is normal. Infrared filters block almost all visible light, so they require long exposures on a tripod to capture the black‑and‑white infrared detail that’s present in landscapes but invisible to the eye.

To use it correctly, you should compose your shot and set manual focus before attaching the filter, making sure the tripod position and camera settings remain unchanged once the filter is on.  If you want to experiment further, you can also try adding a full blue or full red filter to modify the tonal balance of the infrared image.
