This is an original Hungarian World War I 1914-1918 Commemorative Pro Deo Et Patria Medal.  It is unusual in that it has a unique German style court mounting, indicative of award to a German soldier for WWI. 

The Hungarian World War I 1914-1918 Commemorative Medal is silver plated, measuring 37mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness.  This medal version is the combatant’s class.  The obverse has the Anjou-era (Gothic) coat of arms of Hungary with the Hungarian Holy Crown. Under the shield are two crossed swords from the era of St. Stephen. The shield is surrounded by a wreath of laurel branches on the left and cypress leaves on the right.  The reverse has a military steel helmet, with the years 1914-1918 underneath. The inscription PRO DEO ET PATRIA (FOR GOD AND HIS COUNTRY)  is written in an upper circular arch, with a palm branch held together with a ribbon in the lower arch.

The medal was acquired in England in the early 1990s and has remained in a private collection.
