I have here for sale a MAP OF DARBYSHIRE by ROBERT MORDEN Sold by Abel Swale, Awnsham and John Churchill, with online research indicating that it was published in London in 1695.  Robert Morden was an English bookseller, mapmaker, globemaker and engraver, and was one of the first successful commercial mapmakers.  The 1695 edition of Camden's Britannia was the first edition to contain Robert Morden's beautiful county maps.  They were the first county maps to include roads.

This map has a decorative colour cartouche, with outlines in colour, and depictions of woodland and hills.  The map is divided into Hundreds, including Reptington Hundred, High Peak Hundred, Scarsdale Hundred, Wirksworth Hundred, Morlestone Hundred and Appletrie Hundred.  The names of town and villages are clearly marked, including Burton upon Trent, Darby, Buxton, Bakewell, Ashby de la Zouch, and many more.  Parts of the neighbouring counties of Yorkshire, (with Sheafield marked), Cheshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Staffordshire are also shown.  There is a colour scale of 10 Miles, Great, Middle, and Small and the map is surrounded by a border in brown with a decorative edge in red and black.

Sheet map with a vertical crease in the centre, small tear on the left hand side, and a small tear along the top edge.  Strip of paper affixed vertically half way along on the reverse.  Minor marks on the back at the corners .  The map is in very good condition and measures 43 x 36.5 cm.
