A VERY NICE PLATE G 1d RED KANGAROO VARIETY: "0.5mm WHITE OVAL FLAW ON KANGAROO'S BACK" - ADAMS, BELL & POPE SCARCITY 5 KANGAROO - PLATE POSITION GL40 - LISTED 2025 ACSC4(G)h
The definitive reference for the Australian 1d Red Kangaroo stamp by David Adams, Bill Bell and Greg Pope entitled 1d RED KANGAROO AND MAP SERIES (2004) describes the variety as: "GL40 (Scarcity 5): Kangaroo: White Oval Flaw about 0.5mm in size, 7.5mm from right frame and 10.5mm below upper frame. Measurements are to center of flaw".
This variety recurs at position GL40 ... that is … it is the 40th STAMP on the LEFT PANE of PLATE "G" (one of the Upper Plates used for printing between April 1914 and June 1914 - please note the Plate scan below). This GL40 is very nice - well centered with very good perforations. The white flaw is quite prominent and nicely clear of the sharp CDS 1914 postmark (from my experience, the variety can be oval, or, slightly triangular in shape). The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue "KANGAROOS” (ACSC 2025) also lists this variety as: ACSC 4(G)h: "LARGE WHITE SPOT ON KANGAROO'S BACK" - CV$60.
