BRITISH ADMIRALTY PATTERN AP12688 BAKELITE PYRAMID ROTARY TELEPHONE.
On offer is a rare and highly desirable British Royal Naval Admiralty Pattern AP12688 Bakelite Pyramid Rotary Telephone complete with its original AP12691 handset.
It is designated as being a British 200 series phone which was the general classification for pyramid-shaped Bakelite telephones produced by GEC and other manufacturers in the late 1920’s and 1930’s.
Made by AEI (Associated Electrical Industries) and introduced in the late 1930's to early 1940's, the Admiralty Pattern AP12688 was specifically designed for naval service and was the standard Royal Naval telephone used during WWII.
This Bakelite 'pyramid' telephone with a reinforced wall bracket base has a distinctive chromed metal cradle with a sprung restraint that was designed to stop the handset falling off in rough seas.
The dial rotates and returns smoothly, the interior is clean and complete with all original components and wiring (see photographs) and there have been no modifications.
It is in a good vintage cosmetic condition with age-related marks and wear consistent with service use. There has at some time in the past been a repair to the top of the cradle support beneath the chrome handset retainer (see Pics 14 & 15). This damage has been taken into consideration when setting the price.
It has not been converted for modern domestic telephone use and still has its original wiring.
