This is an original Victory Medal awarded to Private James McLennan of the 11^th Battalion, Royal Scots.  Arriving in France on 11 May 1915, James McLennan was entitled to the 1914/15 Star and the British War Medal.  Based on the Victory & British War Medal Roll, James McLennan was transferred to the 2^nd Battalion, Royal Scots at some point during the war.  He received a Class Z discharge on 03 Feb 1919.

 

The 11th (Service) Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) was raised at Edinburgh in August 1914 as part of the New Army.  After completion of initial training in Edinburgh, they joined 27th Brigade, 9th (Scottish) Division and transferred to Bordon.  They proceeded to France, arriving on 11 May 1915.  Their first action was the Battle of Loos in September 1915.  After a period in the Ypres Salient, they moved with the division to take over a sector of the front line at Ploegsteert Wood in January 1916.    In 1916 they were in action in the Battle of the Somme, including the capture of Longueval, the battle of Delville Wood and the battle of Le Transloy.

The medal was acquired in England in the early 1990s and has remained in a private collection.
