Signed lower right: Am. Grosell. Executed in oil on coarse burlap, a support commonly used by Danish artists during the material shortages of the World War II occupation.
The reverse is inscribed Bybilled 1945 ("Cityscape, 1945") and retains a newspaper clipping featuring Anne Margrethe Grosell and her family from her 1979 retrospective at Den Frie, Copenhagen, along with exhibition inventory number 2211, documenting the work's inclusion in the exhibition.
A rare early Copenhagen cityscape by acclaimed Danish painter Anne Margrethe Grosell, depicting a snow-covered street with her characteristic expressive brushwork and subdued winter palette. Painted in 1945, during the final year of the German occupation of Denmark in World War II, the work captures the quiet atmosphere of the city, with pedestrians moving through slush-covered streets lined with townhouses and bare trees.
Housed in its original period wooden frame.

Condition: Ready to hang. Good overall condition, with age-appropriate wear and minor signs of handling consistent with age. ( see photos). A light mark in the burlap is inherent to the original weave and not damage. The coarse burlap support is typical of materials used during the World War II occupation, when canvas was in short supply.
Anne Margrethe Grosell (1909–1999) was a Danish painter best known for her expressive cityscapes and landscapes, particularly her depictions of Copenhagen and the Frederiksberg district. Working directly from observation, she frequently portrayed the city's streets in winter, capturing scenes of snow, slush, and overcast weather without anecdotal or narrative elements. She attended at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1927 to 1932, where she studied under Sigurd Wandel and Aksel Jørgensen. Throughout her long career, Grosell exhibited extensively, including at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (1930–1975, 1977–1979, 1982–1993) and the Charlottenborg Autumn Exhibition (1941, 1945, 1956, 1966, 1976). She also participated in the Club International Féminin Exhibition in Paris (1958)
