. Collet, 1938 – Creuse valley, view from the surroundings of Bogenet castle (Pionnat) – Crozant school – oil on canvas 46 × 38 cm – frame
Oil on canvas signed J. Collet lower left; on the back, legible handwritten inscription: “… view of the Château de Bogenet by Pionnat (Creuse) – J. Collet 8/8/38”. The subject corresponds to the open landscapes of the Creuse valley, with meadows, groves and lines of blue hills in the distance. The date on the reverse places the work in 1938; the indicated site, Bosgenet/Bogenet, is located in Pionnat, in the Creuse, in the heart of the Valley of Painters known as the Crozant School. Bogenet Castle is well documented at Pionnat; see period photo and public notices on this subject.
Oil on canvas, 46 × 38 cm (canvas). Old gilded frame in good used condition; total dimensions visible on photo (
With its light palette and the treatment of the sky and greenery, the canvas is part of the tradition of the Creuse Valley, known as the Crozant School, frequented from the 1880s to the 1930s by Guillaumin, Alluaud, Smith, Bichet, etc. The inscription precisely locates the view around the castle of Bosgenet, commune of Pionnat (Creuse), within the perimeter of this school. General presentations on the Crozant School and the Valley of Painters available online.
Very good general condition. Slight marks of use on the frame, nothing important. Well stretched canvas, clean varnish. Ready to hang.
