John Doyle (1797 in Dublin - 1868 in London):

"A game at chess" originale Lithographie auf Papier ca.27x33cm von John Doyle; im Stein monogrammiert "HB" betitelt und bezeichnet; Thomas McLean Haymarket (London) 1832 Sketch No. 215. The King (right) and Grey (left) face each other across a small octagonal table on which a chess-board is inlaid. William IV's (white) king is checked by a knight; he has lost both knights and seven pawns, and has taken one bishop and Grey's queen. He leans back in his chair, his footstool pushed away, saying, 'I dont know how to move, the Game is yours'. Grey, who wears his Garter ribbon, says: 'I check the King'.

Blatt etwas stockfleckig und auf Karton (29x37) montiert, dieser zeigt auf der Rückseite den Sketch 102 "Whig Retrenchment" aus dem Jahr 1830.

Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.
