ZZ Top is an iconic American rock band formed in Houston, Texas, in 1969, renowned for their signature blend of blues rock, boogie, and hard rock. Often called "That Little Ol' Band from Texas," they became global superstars in the 1980s, merging their gritty blues roots with a polished, synthesizer-heavy sound and memorable, high-concept music videos. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
Band Members & Biographies
Billy Gibbons (Lead Vocals, Guitar): Born in 1949, Gibbons is the band's founder, primary songwriter, and creative force. Before ZZ Top, he led the psychedelic group Moving Sidewalks. His distinctive, raunchy guitar style and blues-driven songwriting have defined the band's sound for over five decades.
Frank Beard (Drums, Percussion): Born in 1949, Beard has been the band's drummer since the early days of their formation in 1969. Previously a member of the band American Blues, he provides the consistent, funky rhythmic foundation that balances the group's blues-rock style. Ironically, despite his name, he is the only member famously known for not having the long, trademark beard of his bandmates.
Dusty Hill (Bass, Vocals, Keyboards): Born in 1949 and passed away in 2021, Hill was a cornerstone of the band's iconic visual and sonic identity. Also formerly of American Blues, he joined ZZ Top in 1970. Known for his "big", distorted bass sound and steady vocals, he remained a core member for over 50 years until his death.
