The Flying Guns is a wartime naval aviation memoir, published in 1942, covering the early Pacific War from Pearl Harbor to the Battle of Midway. It gives a cockpit-level account of U.S. Navy carrier flying, dive-bombing, aerial combat and survival in the opening months of the war.
Clarence Earle Dickinson Jr. was a U.S. Navy carrier pilot with Scouting Squadron Six aboard USS Enterprise. Shot down during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he later fought at Midway and became one of the most decorated American naval aviators of the Pacific War, receiving three Navy Crosses and eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral.
