A VERY PRETTY 1901-1905 BRITISH NEW GUINEA SELECTION OF TEN: BRITISH PROTECTORATE LAKATOIs (FROM THE 2022 BNG) WITH 'MULTIPLE ROSETTES' WATERMARK - LOVELY EARLY POSTMARKS - 2022 GIBBONS APPROX CV£170 ($340AU)
These lovely LAKATOIs were issued 1 July 1901 through to 1905 in the MULTI-ROSETTES watermark. Stamps of QUEENSLAND were used in British New Guinea (Papua) from at least 1885 onwards. Post Offices were opened at Daru (1894), Kulumadau (Woodlarks) (1899), Nivani (1899), Granville (1885), Samarai (1888), Sudest (1899) and Tamata (1899). 'Granville' was renamed PORT MORESBY in 1890. Stamps were usually cancelled 'N.G' (at Port Moresby from 1885) or 'BNG' (without stops at Samaral or with stops at the other offices) from 1888. The Queensland stamps were replaced in Papua by the issue of 1901 (the BRITISH NEW GUINEA LAKATOIs). After this issue, the Lakatois were overprinted "Papua" in 1906 and 1907 (with ROSETTES WMK). The "Papua" overprint (signifying independence from British rule) was applied firstly in LARGE format to the LAKATOI 'ROSETTE WMK' issue in 1906 and then in SMALL format in May/June 1907. Later in 1907 (September), the "BRITISH NEW GUINEA" inscription at the top the LAKATOI was replaced by the LARGE "PAPUA" Plates printed in MELBOURNE on Crown over double-lined A paper. The Large and Small "Papua" OVERPRINTS were only used for a very short time and hence very collectable.
As you can see, this SELECTION is VERY FINE attracting a Stanley Gibbons 2022 CV of £170 (taking the two PERFORATION changes into consideration). The colour here is outstanding for the age and the backs are also relatively clean (standard level of 'tropicalisation' for the region). Lovely early BRITISH NEW GUINEA LAKATOIs. NOT EASY TO FIND NOW.
