Salt Gaze Vase is a visual tribute to the organic rhythm of the ocean, shaped by sand, surf, and shifting dunes. It captures the essence of coastal life with deliberate, sculptural detail. A anchorh rests against its surface, while what appears to be a mooring rope wraps the base, grounding the piece in maritime tradition. Every element works in synchrony—sea, shore, and tide woven together into a single form.

It stands as a thoughtful, intentional work of art, created with care and a deep appreciation for nature’s quiet complexity.

Don Reitz (1929–2014) was one of the most virtuosic throwers the ceramics field has ever known—an inventive force at the wheel, a magnetic presence in the workshop circuit, and an educator whose warmth, kindness, and generosity shaped generations of makers. In 1981, Ceramics Monthly readers named him among the twelve greatest living potters, a testament to his influence and mastery.

Widely known as Mr. Salt, Reitz became a master of salt firing, pushing the technique into new expressive territory and treating it as both craft and philosophy.

Part of his mission statement:

my involvement is with pottery, the containing form, replete with historical metaphor, references to other times. I am mindful not to establish any particular time, past, present, or future. The challenging paradox lies in that the work is historical but without history…

This paradox—work that feels ancient yet untethered to any specific era—became central to Reitz’s artistic identity. His vessels carry the resonance of tradition while remaining defiantly present, alive, and personal.
