A VERY NICE GREG POPE LISTED 3rd WATERMARK 2½d BLUE KANGAROO VARIETY: “COLOUR SPOTS LEFT AND RIGHT OF CAPE YORK" - ACSC UNLISTED (2025 CV APPROX $180 CV DOUBLED FOR "OS") - GREG POPE PLATE POSITION 1L13 - CENTERED SLIGHTLY LEFT - FULL PERFORATIONS
The 2½d Indigo 3rd Watermark Kangaroo was printed in March 1917 by J.B. COOKE to May 1918 then by T.S. HARRISON until discontinuation and replacement on 30 April 1924. The earliest recorded 'date of issue' is September 1917. They were printed from two Plates (Plate 1 - UPPER and Plate 2 - LOWER) each with 120 stamps-on in two Panes of 60 each in 10 horizontal Rows of 6 Stamps. These marsupials were used as the standard 'Letter Rate' to foreign countries. There were eight printings made between March 17 and August 1920 totalling some 11,300,160 stamps. This variety is NOT listed in The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025), but is listed in GREG POPE's very comprehensive study into the 2½d Kanga: "2½d Indigo Kangaroo and map Series" (2003) as:
1L13:
(a) Dark flaw in the Gulf between the eighth and ninth lines from the bottom of the Gulf.
(b) Dark flaw between the sixth and seventh line to the right of Cape York.
The variety recurs at position 1L13 … that is … it is the 13th STAMP on the LEFT PANE of PLATE ONE (the Upper Plate used for printing the 2½d from 1913). This example is very nice. It is centered a little left with a heavyish CDS, but SCARCE in "OS". The ACSC lists the 3rd Watermark varieties of this denomination at $90 each (doubled with "OS" puncture).
