This is an opportunity to own a rare coin of Valentinian I that is apparently unpublished and features a cross.  This coin most closely resembles RIC IX 16 as most of the obverse and reverse matches. The coin was minted in Constantinople. The coins of RIC IX 16 are rare to have a cross on the standard. Many have a chi rho or other marking. This makes this a rare variety. This is a good specimen, with his name legible on the obverse. This is a genuine coin of Valentinian, known as a Christian emperor, struck in bronze, and in the exact condition you see pictured.  This coin features a portrait of Valentinian I on the obverse with solider, standard, cross, and legend on the reverse.  This is a chance to own an ancient coin that is guaranteed to be authentic. Grading is subjective.  In my opinion, this coin is VF.

As the Roman Emperor who ruled the Western Empire from 364 to 375 CE,  Valentinian I was a baptized Nicene (orthodox) Christian. While his faith was orthodox, Valentinian was famously pragmatic and dedicated to maintaining social order. His reign is characterized by several key religious policies:

Religious Toleration: Although personally a devout Christian, Valentinian proclaimed full religious freedom. He did not persecute pagans or heretical sects like the Arians, and he even tolerated certain pagan mysteries and rituals.

Reversing Pagan Restorations: He repealed the anti-Christian legislation of his pagan predecessor, Julian the Apostate.

State and Church Relations: He revoked a law that barred Christians from teaching and enacted about 30 laws addressing clergy privileges and Church abuses.

Restrictions on Magic: While he allowed traditional religious practices, he strictly prohibited nocturnal sacrifices and magic, viewing them as potential causes of public disorder.
