THE SCARCE 3rd WATERMARK 2d GREY KANGAROO VARIETY: "17th LINE ABOVE AND LEFT OF ALBANY MISSING AND BREAK IN INNER LEFT FRAME OPPOSITE BASE OF 'T' OF TWO" - PLATE POSITION 3R51 (DIE IIa) - WAY UNDERVALUED at $60 (ACSC 2025 NOT UPDATED CVs FOR 8 TO 10 YEARS!) - IF ONLY THE RBA DID THAT!
The Die IIa 3rd Watermark 2d GREY Kangaroo was printed in March 1918 by J.B. COOKE then by T.S. HARRISON through to October 1920. A new Plate 3 (Die IIa) was inserted in the upper position in March 1918 to replace the original Plate 1 (Die I) used for the initial 1st, 2nd & 3rd Watermark printings. The 2d Grey was used as the 2nd weight step for letters within Australia and the British Empire. Overall, there were four printings off the new Plate 3 (Die IIa)/Plate 2 (Die I) configuration totalling 14,400,0000 stamps (half of which were Die IIa from the new Plate 3). There were only some 7,200,0000 Die IIa Grey Marsupials printed. This particular 2d Grey Kangaroo carries the Die IIa Plate Variety identified by Greg Pope and listed in his comprehensive work entitled: A Study of all Three Plates of the 2d Grey of the Kangaroo and Map Series (2002) as follows:
3R51: "The seventeenth line above and to the west of Albany is missing between the coast and the left inner frame and there is a break in the left inner frame opposite and to the bottom of T of TWO.
This variety recurs at position 3R51 ... that is ... it is the 51st STAMP on the RIGHT PANE of PLATE 3 (the new Die IIa Plate replacing Plate ONE in the upper position for the later March 1918 printings). This 3rd Watermark Die IIa variety is a lovely example with nice perfs (centered a little right).
