A VERY PRETTY GREG POPE LISTED 2nd WATERMARK 2½d INDIGO KANGAROO VARIETY: "BREAK IN LINE ONE ABOVE 'U' OF AUSTRALIA" - ACSC UNLISTED - GREG POPE PLATE POSITION 2R47 - 2025 CV APPROX $150
The 2½d Indigo 2nd Watermark Kangaroo was printed in July 1915 in one single printing by J.B. COOKE. The stamps were issued that month. They were printed from two Plates (Plate One ~ UPPER and Plate Two ~ LOWER) each with 120-stamps-on in two Planes of 60 each in 10 horizontal Rows of 6. Used as the 'Letter Rate' to foreign countries there were only 1,440,000 stamps produced. This small break is NOT listed The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue “KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) but as you can readily see, the break is very clear and definite. GREG POPE (2½d Indigo Kangaroo and Map Series 2003) lists this variety as:
2R47: "Break in the line of shading above U of AUSTRALIA"
This 2nd Watermark version is a beauty. Centered a little high with good perforations (not perfect) and a very, very fresh appearance (gorgeous really). Although the ACSC doesn't list 2R47, it DOES list 2R34 and 2R50 on the Right Pane each with a CV of $150. The colour reference scan is from Greg Pope's very detailed study into our 2½d marsupial.
