A VERY NICE BANWELL & PARSONS LISTED 3rd WATERMARK 9d VIOLET KANGAROO VARIETY: “BREAK IN MIDDLE OF UPPER SERIF OF LETTER ‘I’ OF AUSTRALIA” - BANWELL & PARSONS PLATE POSITION 4R11 - 2025 APPROX CV$320 (VARIETY WITH 'OS' PUNCTURE) - LOVELY PALE VIOLET COLOUR
The Die IIB 3rd Watermark 9d Violet was printed by T.S. HARRISON in September/October 1918. The earliest 'date-of-use' known is 16 April 1919. These marsupials were printed off two Plates (an Upper and Lower) each with 120 stamps on in two panes of 60 (each with 10 rows of 6). They were used as the interstate telegram rate (up to 1 October 1920) and as make-up for parcel rates. There were 20 printings of the Die IIB made between October 1918 and August 1927, totalling 59,605,440 stamps. This variety is listed in the very comprehensive study of the Australian 9d Violet Kangaroo by A.D. Banwell & R.F. Parsons titled: THE 9d KANGAROO STAMPS (2005) as:
Banwell & Parsons "4R11: AUSTRALIA: BREAK IN MIDDLE OF UPPER SERIF OF 'I' OF AUSTRALIA (3rd to CofA Watermarks)".
The variety recurs at position 4R11 … that is … it is the 11th STAMP on the RIGHT PANE of PLATE 4 (the Lower Plate used to print this 9d Violet from October 1918). This one is very nice. It is well centered with good perforations and a nice CDS Postmark. This Plate 4 variety is NOT listed in THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE "KANGAROOS" (ASCS 2025), however the ACSC does list 4R7, 4R12, 4R21, 4R30 & 4R49 CVs at $125 (X2.5 FOR 'OS"). A very nice example of the 4R11 marsupial (JUST A VERY LIGHT CREASE ACROSS THE TOP OF THE 'OS' PUNCTURE.
