R & G Co (Riley & Gowan) was founded as a jewelry manufacturer in Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1874, and expanded during the 1920 to produce high end compacts, perfume bottle, and vanity sets.  This unusual compact (possibly a prototype) has a mirror and a compartment for powder or rouge, but it also has a hidden compartment for perfume!

At first glance it appears that this compact would open by pressing down the gold tone crown (similar to that on a pocket watch), but the crown does not depress.  There is a slight lip under the crown where one must lift the lid with your thumbnail.  The hinge for this is hard to detect until you realize how this lid opens. The gold tone crown actually unscrews, revealing an opening at the top of the compact.  (Please note, "crown" refers to the corresponding part on a pocket watch; this is a basic screw top, it is not shaped like a crown!)  The opening is actually a separate perfume compartment, built into the frame of the compact, surrounding the powder/rouge compartment.  

Out of curiosity I used a perfume funnel and gently put some water inside.  When I could detect no leaks, I filled the compartment full of water, screwed the top in place and let it sit upright for two days just to make sure there were no leaks from within.  This is definitely a sealed compartment.  

The compact itself is in good condition with only slight wear commensurate with age and use.  The finish is "Nuwite" which is a patented chrome or rhodium plating; the screw top is possibly gold plated. The compact is approximately 2-1/4" long with the screw top in place, and measures approx 1-7/8" at its widest point x approx 3/8" thick.
