Rare find! Original leather map tube and Advance Sheet of the 1928 USGS quadrangle map of Snow Shoe and vicinity, in Centre County, Pennsylvania.
- Overall size of the map is 68.5 x 57.3 cm [27 in. x 22½" in.], and it is drawn on a scale of 1:48,000. The coverage area extends into the margins, beyond the marked border lines of longitude 77°45' W to
78°00' W and latitude 41°00' N to 41°15' N.
- The map is labeled "Advance Sheet. Subject to Correction" in the upper margin. A USGS "Advance Sheet" is an early, uncorrected preliminary edition of a topographic map released to provide essential data before the final, polished version was published. These maps were printed directly from initial compilations and were used for fieldwork while the final cartography, editing, and official publication were still in progress.
- This map has clearly been used and displays numerous corrections and additions made during fieldwork prior to publication.
- It is accompanied by a sturdy, protective, cylindrical leather carrying case with lid. The design and sturdy construction keep large-format documents like this map safe from tears, creases, and weather while out in the field.
- The map tube measures 58.5 cm [23 in.] in length, with cap on. The outside diameter is 7 cm [2¾ in.].
- Condition:
Both map and tube are in good, used condition. Along with the markings, corrections, and additions, the map has wear at the edges, stray wrinkles, and minor tears, all consistent with outdoor use in mountainous terrain. The leather carrying case has wear at both ends, a scuff between the two wrap-around straps, and obvious signs of use. The tube would've also had a shoulder strap, but that is not present. Please see the scans and feel
free to ask any questions.
- These are the real deal! Genuine and authentic. We've been selling original antique maps on eBay and at map fairs around the country for more than 30 years. Be aware that sometimes what are offered as "old maps" are actually copies that are no older than yesterday's newspaper. Just like a Xerox copy of a $20 bill is not the same thing as a real, honest-to-goodness Jackson printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
