Cheng-Khee Chee (1934–2025) was an internationally acclaimed Chinese-American master painter, educator, and author who is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in contemporary watermedia. For over 60 years, he lived and worked in Duluth, Minnesota, where he came to be known as a legendary regional and national artist. The East-West SynthesisBorn in Fujian Province, China, and raised in Malaysia, Chee immigrated to the United States in 1962. His signature approach was a meticulous blending of Western abstraction and expressionism with traditional Chinese brush and ink techniques. He famously described his culinary and artistic tastes similarly, stating that he didn't just paint "the Eastern way" or "the Western way," but sought a total creative synthesis.

2. Philosophical & Technical BreakthroughsChee deeply rooted his creative process in Taoist philosophy, aiming for a state of effortless creation and letting the medium dictate the flow. Rather than sticking to one rigid style, he pioneered several complex textures and technical processes:The Saturated Wet Process: Keeping thick art paper entirely soaked with water throughout the painting process, allowing him to wipe out and lift pigment dynamically to create luminous lighting effects.Paper Crinkling & Marbling: Crumpling heavy rice or masa papers to achieve highly textured, organic bark patterns or utilizing floating pigments for dreamy, spiritual backdrops. The "Abstract to Realistic" Shift: He would frequently start a canvas with a completely non-objective, chaotic splash of color, and then intuitively pull recognizable shapes out of the noise.

3. Commercial Illustration & LegacyBeyond fine art galleries, Chee reached massive commercial acclaim as the illustrator for the highly beloved 1992 children’s book Old Turtle, which became a national bestseller and won the International Reading Association Children's Book Award. He was an Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota Duluth and held the ultra-rare Dolphin Fellow status within the American Watercolor Society (AWS), having captured more than 200 prestigious national awards over his lifetime.
