The Dolby Cat. 350 is a spectral recording (SR) noise reduction module used in professional analog audio processing. Designed to slot into mainframe units like the Dolby 363 or 365, it provides massive dynamic range and eliminates the tape hiss and distortion associated with analog recording and film formats.

Core Function & Technology
  • Spectral Recording (SR): Introduced as the successor to Dolby A-type, SR uses sliding bands, fixed networks, and modulation control to maximize headroom and suppress noise without altering the natural transient response.
  • Encode / Decode: Like all professional Dolby formats, it acts as a compander (compressor/expander). Audio is encoded during tracking to tape and decoded to a completely clean signal during playback.
  • Studio "Sound": While primarily created for noise reduction, many modern producers and archivists utilize the Cat. 350 combined with analog tape machines to achieve a warm, highly saturated, and rich analog compression texture. 
Compatibility & Hardware
  • Host Units: The Cat. 350 card is typically housed in multi-channel rack units like the Dolby 363 (which allows for switchable A/SR processing) or the Dolby 365.
  • Calibration: Because of its highly sensitive 4-band processing, Cat. 350 units must be meticulously aligned and calibrated to in-house standards alongside the specific tape machine in use
