Gracefully poised on a low pedestal, the perfectly spherical bowl strides the line between deep amethyst and rich, tobacco-y amber. ( I have tried to show the bowl in many different lights and against a variety of colors, but it is hard to convey the depth and mutability of its coloration).

The saturated color is elevated and enlivened by a sprinkling of bubbles throughout the piece. There is even the slightest hint of a golden iridescence, which I have attempted ( and largely failed ) to capture in the photos.

Size definitely matters here - the piece's imposing ( 9 x 8" ) scale lends a grandeur that couldn't be achieved with a more petite work.

I have seen this piece attributed to Italy, and there are similar works in Blenko's " Dusty Rose" line. Whatever its provenance, it is a heart-stopping, artist -crafted ( note the rough pontil) work that synergizes color, translucency and form in the way only the finest original art glass can.
