A rare abstract composition created during Danish painter Gerda Thorkild Hansen’s stay in New York in the 1960s, a formative period in which she engaged closely with the American postwar art scene and contemporary abstract movements.
Dimensions inclusive frame: 52 × 43 cm (20.5 × 16.9 in.).
A certificate of authenticity is included with the artwork.
Condition:The painting is in good overall condition, with age-appropriate surface wear and a stable appearance.
Gerda Thorkild Hansen (1911–1990), born on Frederiksberg as Gerda Marguerite Antoinette Bønnelycke Jensen, was part of the generation of Danish modernists who explored abstraction, materiality, and form in the decades following the Second World War.In the 1940s, she exhibited within the experimental milieu around Pustervig Kunsthandel in Copenhagen alongside artists such as Robert Jacobsen, Ib Geertsen, and Albert Mertz. Working with oil and enamel, she developed a distinctive and tactile abstract style. in the early 1960s, she moved to North America, founding Atelier Bonnelycke in Montreal and later exhibiting in both Montreal and New York, including at Ward Eggleston Galleries in 1964 and 1965.
