A 259-year-old ring with an amazing history!
This beautiful solid 22 carat gold band bears a Regency added infinity symbol in gold, plus a fascinating inscription inside.
Decorated with black enamel and foliate patterns, it's set with two pearls, and comes complete with a letter of explanation from the descendant of someone the ring was gifted to - itself over 100 years old!
The ring is a superb quality edged D-shaped band, and reads 'Rt Hon. Ann Dow. L.y King July 1767 Æt 83' inside. Lady Ann King was the wife of Lord Peter King, English lawyer and politician who rose to become Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, the highest-ranking traditional minister among the Great Officers of State in the United Kingdom, nominally outranking the prime minister.
The letter reads: 'Memorial ring of Lady King given to Mrs Spory mother of Sarah Fletcher formerly Spory, the latter being the wife of John Fletcher my Great Grandfather, RA Fletcher, 1917' and also references another ring, now lost.
This piece is in good condition for its age, with enamel and metal wear, an old resizing and worn pearls. It bears the maker's mark JW. It's a size 8 not resizable, and weighs 4.0 grams.
