BMT Brooklyn Transit 1933 Union St Line Trolley Ticket #00003 Rare Low Number
Extremely rare early-issue specimen; likely the first clean ticket removed from the original conductor's book.
This is a pristine, uncirculated trolley transfer ticket from the BMT (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation) issued on June 1, 1933.
Condition and Provenance
This item is part of a substantial, high-grade transit collection recently added to our store, featuring decades of curated New York City history. This ticket was recently removed from a meticulously maintained archival collector’s binder. As such, the reverse side features a small piece of collector's tape from its original mounting. The tape has no ill effect on the structural integrity or quality of the paper other than its visual presence on the back. The ticket remains crisp, unpunched, and in uncirculated condition.
Collector Highlights
This is ticket #00003, representing one of the very first fares available on the Union St. Line on that Thursday morning in 1933. This ticket is uncirculated and unpunched, retaining its original color and crisp edges. It was likely preserved as a file copy or specimen rather than being issued in the field. The back features a fascinating period block-out of the Fifth Ave. transfer point, reflecting a real-time route change in the Brooklyn transit network. The front details the Two (2) Cents transfer fee, a common revenue practice during the Great Depression.
Historical Context
The Union St. Line was a vital trolley artery serving Park Slope and Gowanus. By the mid-1930s, these routes were being converted to bus service (eventually becoming the B71). This ticket captures the "Golden Age" of Brooklyn streetcars just years before they vanished from the city streets.
