Danaus plexippus, commonly known as the Monarch butterfly, is one of the most recognizable and iconic butterfly species in the world. It is famous for its striking orange wings adorned with black veins and white-spotted black borders. This bold coloration serves as a warning to predators about its toxicity, which comes from the milkweed plants consumed during its larval stage. Monarchs have a wingspan of approximately 8 to 10 cm, making them a medium to large butterfly. Their life cycle includes four distinct stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly. The caterpillars are equally striking, featuring black, white, and yellow bands before transforming into emerald-green chrysalides with gold accents.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Danaus plexippus is its annual migration, where millions of Monarchs travel thousands of kilometers between North America and their overwintering sites in Mexico and California. This multi-generational journey is guided by environmental cues and an internal biological clock. During migration, Monarchs rely on nectar from flowers for energy, playing a crucial role in pollination. However, habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use threaten their populations, leading to conservation efforts to protect their breeding and overwintering habitats.
