Huechys sanguinea, commonly known as the "blood-red huechys," is a striking cicada species recognized for its vibrant colouration. The species exhibits a characteristic black body with vivid red or orange markings, particularly on its abdomen and wings, giving it a bold and unmistakable appearance. These cicadas are medium-sized, typically ranging from 3 to 4 centimetres in length.
Huechys sanguinea is primarily found in parts of Southeast Asia, including countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, where it thrives in warm, humid environments.
The genus name "Huechys" is derived from Greek, possibly referring to the buzzing sound characteristic of cicadas, while "sanguinea" relates to the species’ blood-red colouration. A curious fact about these cicadas is that their vibrant red colour might serve as a warning to predators, signalling toxicity or unpalatability, a common defence mechanism in brightly coloured insects.
Please consider that the specimen you will receive may slightly differ in size, shape or colour from the picture shown as you are purchasing a natural product. Please note: In our selection of white frames, the inner box frame—the part that creates the depth of the shadow box—is currently only available in black, as white versions are not available at this time. The outer frame remains white.
