Phanaeus furiosus, commonly known as the rainbow scarab, is a striking species of dung beetle famous for its vivid, metallic coloration that can include shades of green, blue, gold, and red. Males are especially recognizable due to the prominent horn projecting from their heads, which they use in battles with other males over mates or resources. Like other dung beetles, this species plays an important ecological role by feeding on animal dung, which it shapes into balls and buries as a food source for its larvae. This behavior helps recycle nutrients back into the soil and improves soil health.
The rainbow scarab is primarily found in the southeastern United States and northern Mexico, It inhabits open areas such as pastures, forests, and grasslands where mammal dung is available. Warm climates and sandy or loose soils are especially favorable for their burrowing behavior. Despite their relatively small size, these beetles are vital contributors to their ecosystems, aiding in waste decomposition and reducing parasites associated with animal droppings.
