Megasoma occidentalis, commonly known as the Western Elephant Beetle, is a large and robust scarab beetle native to the Pacific slope of southern Mexico. This impressive insect belongs to the subfamily Dynastinae, often referred to as rhinoceros beetles due to the prominent horns found in males. Males exhibit a pronounced cephalic horn and a thoracic horn, both used in combat with rivals, especially during mating competitions. Females lack these horns and are more rounded in appearance. Adults are typically black or dark brown and covered in a layer of fine, velvety setae, giving them a dusty or golden look. Despite their intimidating size and armor-like exoskeleton, they are harmless to humans.

The natural habitat of Megasoma occidentalis includes tropical and subtropical forests, where the larvae develop in decaying wood and organic matter, playing an important role in the ecosystem as decomposers. The adult beetles are mostly nocturnal and are attracted to lights, which often brings them into contact with people. Due to their striking appearance and rarity, they are highly sought after by insect collectors. Although not considered endangered, habitat loss and collection pressure in some areas may impact their local populations. Their calm behavior and size make them a fascinating subject for entomologists and enthusiasts alike.

We firmly support the sustainable tropical butterfly collections as long as they take care of the conservation of the rainforest where they fly and the development of responsible conscious trading.
This allows us to support local ranching farms with ethically sourced material and help at the same time collectors and enthusiasts to contribute to understanding and treasuring those species.

Please take into consideration that the specimen that you will receive may slightly differ in size, shape or colour from the picture shown as you are purchasing a natural product.
