Stichophthalma louisa, commonly known as the Louise Jungle Queen, is a large butterfly from the Nymphalidae family. It boasts striking, pale brown to yellowish-brown wings adorned with subtle darker patterns. The forewings have bold eyespots that vary in size and number, offering camouflage from predators. Its hindwings feature scalloped edges, adding to its elegant appearance. This species is distributed primarily across Southeast Asia, particularly in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, thriving in forested, hilly regions. The genus name, Stichophthalma, is derived from Greek, meaning "row of eyes," referring to the butterfly's distinctive eye spots. The specific epithet louisa likely honors a notable individual, though exact etymology details are unclear. A curious trait of Stichophthalma louisa is its preference for flying in low light conditions, such as at dawn or dusk, making it a crepuscular species, which is unusual for most butterflies that are active during daylight.
