The Coelonia fulvinotata, commonly known as the Fulvous Hawkmoth, is a large moth with a 100-120 mm wingspan. It displays striking patterns, with dark brown or black forewings and a scattering of light spots. The hindwings have distinctive white bands, and the moth's abdomen often features yellow or orange spots. Native to parts of Africa and the Indian Ocean islands, the Fulvous Hawkmoth is widespread in Madagascar, East Africa, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Its larvae feed on plants like the trumpet vine and gardenia. The name "Coelonia" derives from Greek, referring to the cavity or hollow nature of the moth's body, while "fulvinotata" translates to "tawny-spotted," a reference to its markings. A curiosity of this species is its impressive migratory ability, sometimes travelling vast distances, making it a fascinating subject for taxidermy collectors and lepidopterists alike.
