Morpho didius, commonly known as the Didius Blue Morpho, is an iconic butterfly species belonging to the Nymphalidae family.
The name "Morpho" is derived from the Greek word for 'shape' or 'form,' alluding to the butterfly's striking visual presence. 'Didius' may be attributed to its grandeur, reminiscent of Roman emperors.
With a wingspan reaching up to 15 centimetres, it is one of the largest species within the Morpho genus. Native to the rainforests of South America, including countries like Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela, the Morpho didius is often spotted fluttering among the lush vegetation of these tropical habitats. A remarkable feature of this species is its defensive strategy: when threatened, it produces a loud, clicking sound by clapping its wings together, a startling deterrent for potential predators.
