The grit number is printed on the backing of the sanding disc. It will never happen that the granule is more aggressive than the number printed on the backing. Which grit it says on the backing and it's exact the grit. The larger the number is, the finer the grain is. Start with a low grit to efficiently power through most of the material, then switch to a high-grit paper to smooth the surface for the final stain.
