Stunning 1924 Thomas L Mott Shipton Antique Blue Morpho Butterfly Wing Brooch/pin. Sterling Silver Oval Opal Chip.

This pin was made in England and features an impressive reverse hand painted picture of a girl bending over a body of water towards a frog’s lilly pad, possibly hoping it would morph into her Prince Charming.

Although jewelry made of insect parts dates back to ancient times, Thomas Mott's exhibit at the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 is credited with making butterfly jewelry all the rage.

Mott, was founded in 1875, acquired Henry W. King in 1925 and Owen Brothers in 1933, making it the largest producer of butterfly wing jewelry and incorporates reverse painting techniques.

In 1922, Shipton Co. of Birmingham, England, applied for a patent with the following specifications: The invention uses real butterfly wings for the production of coloured pictures on glass sheets or surfaces, being first painted or otherwise fixed upon the back of a glass sheet so as to have transparent or substantially transparent portions or space to be subsequently filled in with real butterfly wings applied against the back of the glass sheet to give the desired colour effects. This reverse painted piece is stamped PAT 202213

Composed of shimmering iridescent blue, yellow, green, red, & orange Butterfly wings set in Sterling Silver under a domed glass cabochon.

These wonderful pieces were exhibited by Thomas Mott at the Great Empire Exhibition 1924.

This pre loved piece has minor surface wear due to its age. Otherwise a wonderful piece to add to any collection. Weighing 6.0 grams and 1 5/8 of an inch by 1 1/8 of an inch, and is in excellent Minty vintage condition. Pin on reverse still very strong and the clasp appears to have been replaced.
