About Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant

Does Marathon hurt or sting? Marathon does not hurt or sting when applied to intact or damaged skin. Upon application, a warm sensation may be felt on the affected area, but this is only temporary.

Why it does feel warm when applied? When Marathon is applied, the polymerization of the molecules occurs via an exothermic reaction, producing a small amount of heat. This sensation is temporary and not harmful.

What causes the scent on Marathon? Marathon is made up of cyanoacrylate monomers, which naturally give off a slight scent when exposed to air. The scent will fade in the hours following application.

How and when is Marathon going to disappear from my skin? Marathon naturally wears off over 1-3 days, due to the skin cells of the applied area being shed off. In some instances where the skin is dry, Marathon may last longer than 3 days.

If I need to remove it immediately, how do I do it? Excess Marathon Liquid Skin Protectant can be removed before it dries by wiping it with a clean tissue. Once it has dried, unwanted Marathon can be softened with petroleum jelly and removed. It will naturally wear off within 1-3 days as the skin naturally sheds off.

How long do I need to let it dry? Marathon takes about 60 seconds or less to dry, if you applied a uniform, thin layer of the product. If a thicker layer is applied, longer time is needed to let it dry. Thicker layers may also lead to premature cracking as the product loses flexibility.

Applying Marathon

How much should I apply? Apply a thin, even layer of Marathon over application area. Be aware that a thin layer is sufficient and over application can reduce the wear time. Do NOT rub Marathon in like a cream, as the coverage will not be as effective and the potential for a warming sensation will increase.

Why does it stay longer on the skin? Marathon liquid skin protectant naturally wears off over 1-3 days depending on skin type or condition and the activity level. In some instances where the skin is dry, Marathon may last longer than 3 days. In others where the skin is constantly exposed to fluids (such as urine, stool, wound exudate, etc), it may require reapplication sooner.

How do I apply it?
Clean and dry the skin (Medline Remedy® Antimicrobial or Foaming Cleanser is suggested) before applying Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant. Make sure that the skin is thoroughly dry and that all traces of moisturizers, lotions, lotion soaps or lanolin are removed from the application site.
Protect any sensitive areas, such as stomas and mucous membranes (e.g., the gums and inside of mouth).
Remove the applicator from the packaging. While holding the applicator upright (with the sponge tip to the top), firmly squeeze between the finger and thumb to crush the sealed inner tube.
Turn the applicator upside down and wait for 5 seconds while the Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant soaks through the sponge tip. Gently squeezing the tube will speed up this process, but be cautious of over squeezing.
As soon as the sponge is wet, slowly spread the Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant, gently and evenly, to form a thin transparent coating. Ensure that the desired area is completely covered and extends at least an inch (2.5cm) beyond the affected region.
If Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant is used at room temperature it will dry within a minute. Some people may feel a temporary warming sensation as the cyanoacrylate dries.
Do not over apply or rub the Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant in like a cream as the coverage will not be as effective and the warming sensation will be increased. It is most effective when the coating is paper-thin.
Ensure that Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant has dried, completely, before covering with clothes, applying adhesive products such as tapes and dressings, or incontinence products.
Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant naturally wears off over 1-3 days depending on skin type and activity level. Inspect the film regularly (at least once a day) and if any cracking or flaking appears, apply another layer on top, until the area is completely covered once again. It is not necessary to remove the cracked and flaking layer; however, if it is applied too frequently excess build-up will lead to a thick inflexible film.
One Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant applicator will cover an area of approximately 4 in x 4 in (10 cm x 10 cm).
Do not use cleansers that leave a protective barrier, such as dimethicone, petrolatum, mineral oil, etc.

Why is it cracking? Cracking tends to occur a couple of days after Marathon has been applied. If this is the case, clean the area and apply another thin layer of product. Premature cracking can also occur when too much product has been applied (the film looks dark purple and not light violet), as a thick layer is less flexible, feels stiffer and can be uncomfortable for the patient.

When should I reapply Marathon? If cracking has occurred or if it has been three days or more, clean the area and apply another thin layer of product. Continue applying Marathon accordingly until the skin returns back to health.

Could I apply Marathon on a wound? Marathon should not be applied on deep, open, or bleeding wounds, infected areas second or third degree burns, or on chronic wounds.

Could I use Marathon over denuded (excoriated), wet, weepy skin? Marathon is indicated to protect intact or damaged skin. Shallow areas where the epidermis has been compromised can be protected with Marathon. Consult a healthcare professional if you are uncertain.

About Skin Conditions

Do I need to crust around the ostomy when I use Marathon? For use around ostomies, Marathon should be applied on the surrounding skin. Avoid using Marathon on deep, bleeding, or chronic wounds. Marathon is indicated for use on intact or damaged skin.

Can I use Marathon over damaged skin? Marathon is indicated for use over intact or damaged skin. Damaged skin includes reddened, irritated, inflamed and shallow areas that could be missing the epidermis (such as open blisters, skin tears, etc). Marathon should not be applied on infected or deep wounds or directly on membranes (such as mucosal membranes).

Can I use Marathon over intact skin or fragile skin when it is not broken? Absolutely. Marathon is designed to protect skin. We all know that methods of prevention are more powerful than treatment. Marathon can be applied over areas prone to skin tears, abrasions, adhesive stripping, among others. Marathon can be used safely to protect the skin from friction and moisture in a variety of situations.

Using Marathon

Can I use it on babies? Marathon Liquid Skin protectant is not indicated or contrainidicated for use on children and infants. To date, Clinical studies have been completed for the evaluation of allergic reactions, as well as studies by nurses and doctors who chose to evaluate the product for this specific use. Literature is available upon request.

Could I use it around my eyes? Always avoid contact with mucous membranes such as the eyes and mouth when using Marathon. A healthcare professional needs to protect all sensitive areas prior to application.

Why is it violet (purple) and would it stain my skin forever? The violet color has been added to allow easy identification of the area where it is applied. It also allows you to visualize when the film is cracked and you need to reapply. With time, the area may look darker as the film may pick up some dirt or lint from your clothes, but all this will disappear once Marathon has shed off.

Maintenance & Contraindications

Can I shower with Marathon? Once Marathon is dry, you can shower. Try to be gentle with the area where the product was applied. Pat dry. Avoid applying lotions or creams on top of Marathon, as they may affect its wear time.

Are there specific storage conditions for Marathon? Marathon should be stored in a cool and dry environment. Avoid high humidity and excessive heat.

How do I clean the area? With a gentle cloth or wipe, apply a no-rinse cleanser (we recommend to use Medline Remedy® cleansers) that are free of petrolatum, mineral oil, or other ingredients that could leave a film on the skin. The skin should be clean and dry prior to the application of Marathon.

What are the warnings and contraindications for Marathon? If irritation (redness, inflammation, heat, pain, and change in skin color) develops, immediately discontinue product use. If pain, and change in skin color develops, immediately discontinue product use. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
